Spurs hire WNBA star Becky Hammon as assistant coach

The  Spurs have hired current San Antonio Stars players Becky Hammon as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Hammon, who is currently in her 16th WNBA season, announced on July 23 that she would retire as a player at the conclusion of the 2014 campaign.

Hammon is believed to be the first full-time female assistant in NBA history. The hire brought further diversity to Gregg Popovich’s staff, which also added European giant Ettore Messina as an assistant earlier this summer.
