After a minor delay to work out details, the Mavericks made it official with Deron Williams on Tuesday, signing the three-time All-Star to a two-year contract worth a shade over $10-million. The second season will be at Williams’ option.
Williams authorized his representatives to negotiate a buyout with the Brooklyn Nets and that reduced the amount of the Nets’ responsibility to Williams from $43-million over the next two seasons to $27.5-million spread over five seasons.
And so, the Mavericks were able to offer a two-year deal at roughly $5-million per season to secure Williams, who they had pursued in free agency in 2012.
