Danny Ainge denied a Yahoo Sports report that the Celtics offered Rajon Rondo a five-year, $70 million contract extension.
“That’s not the correct number,” Ainge said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich show on Thursday. “We wouldn’t have been able to do that.”
Ainge reiterated that the Celtics did make an offer, but it was for only two years because of limitations within the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
Ainge said the extension would have paid Rondo “11, 12, 13 million, somewhere in that neighborhood.”
