Dirk Nowitzki wants to play at least two more seasons

Dirk Nowitzki has two seasons remaining on his current contract and he was asked at the Mavericks' media day whether he has given thoughts to NBA retirement.

"Obviously it gets closer, but it's not like I'm thinking of the beach every day," he said. "I want to play two more years under contract here, hopefully at a high level, compete, hopefully be efficient when I'm out there."

When he does elect to retire, Nowitzki promised Monday, he will not announce it beforehand and turn his final season into a farewell tour.

"That's the worst thing that I can think of, [having to] talk about every day," Nowitzki said. "When I'm gone, I'm gone. That's how it's going to go."
